TomTom GO: Navigation, Maps App Reviews

No cross countries navigation

Its 2016 and yet TomTom still cant give you a route between the countries. So if this kind of navigation is important to you, dont get this app.

Terrible update

I had high hopes for this app, with clearer interface, and everything that it promised. This app is pure garbage. I recommend the older app, as long as it is still available. When that changes, I would recommend the error prone Apple Maps or frankly anything but this app.

Getting there

The good: provides solid routing and traffic reporting as usual for tomtom. I especially like the "Eco" routing option. The red light camera notifications are great. Its also helpful that we can try it before buying. The bad: would like to be able to select between several route options (like google maps), add waypoints, and see the list of upcoming turns in a list. The battery also drains fast even when I have the phone plugged in and charging. When these issues are fixed I will probably subscribe for a year.

Forced upgrade to subscription model

I owned the lifetime free map update tomtom USA and Canada. Now its removed from the App Store. If you dont have a backup and change devices youre screwed and out the $40 something bucks. Tomtom Go is horrible, and the maps are way too large. Check out PocketMaps Pro instead.

Go (f--- yourself Tom Tom)!

I paid a lot of money for the US version of this app that has not so mysteriously disappeared from the App Store and it doesnt seem like the money grubbing execs at Tom Tom care about how underhanded and greedy the whole thing looks.

A completely new gps!

This is the best nav app in the AppStore to date. The UI is a breath of fresh air and its actually easier to use than other nav apps.

Lost gps signal a few times

On my trip to Washington DC the app lost the signal a few times. It happened on a busy highway. Wasnt fun. Plus some places are not up to date, like Miami, FL and Washington DC. I like that it stores maps on my phone. I dont like that I cant add a stop to my route or alternate it. You re stuck with the route the app decided is the best. I want to compare a few routes before I start driving.

Battery hog

Seems to be a big battery hog. Even plugged in my iPhone 6plus will die when this is on for over an hour.

Worst Interface EVER!!!

There are many times that Ill simply give up trying to use this app because the interface is so unbelievably, horribly, frighteningly bad. There is no global search - to find anything you have to first chose a category, then chose where it is. Insane. Im trying to find a park - Cottonwood State Park in Oregon. First you have to chose "Address" - nope, dont have it. Thats what a Nav app is supposed to find. "Place" or "Point of Interest" but either of those ask "Near Me", "in City" or "Near Home" well its none of those. If you dont have any idea youre screwed and have to use another app. If you guess at a town it will only find it within several miles. This essentially means this app cant find ANYTHING! The flip side is that its the only app that will calculate a route favoring twisty, curvy roads. So to use this app you need to first purchase a good nav app like Navigon which opens with a simple, global search option, then copy the address and try to paste it into TomTom. But youll eventually give up because its too frustrating. Seriously, theres no way the person who designed this has ever used it. WORST. INTERFACE. EVER.

Im looking for a replacement

The new graphics engine is nice. Thats the only positive thing I can say about this. The new subscription model is a terrible idea. With the old app I could pay once and use the maps and routing as much as I wanted and pay for traffic on the occasions when I wanted it. The traffic routing is so ineffective as to be pointless. The maps, directions, and coordinates dont match up. The directions frequently end a block or more away from my actual destination. In a dense city, that makes them worthless. I have to switch to my built-in maps app to get the last few blocks. The "near me" search area is always too small. If I want to search anywhere in my own city, I have to enter the city name first, which is a huge pain. Finally, it constantly directs me to do dangerous or illegal things. Things like illegal turns and trying to cross 3 lanes of traffic and a median to make a left turn coming off the interstate. Naturally, tomtom has been unresponsive to reports about their broken maps and dangerous directions. Im done with these guys. Its been a good run but its obvious that quality has tanked and wont be improving any time soon.

Where is TomTom Europe?

Some time ago Ive spent 60 Euros on TomTom Europe which did the job on my old iPhone. Now that Ive got a new one, I cant even install that app. An yes, this GO thing is ugly.

A Great GPS Ruined!

The original Tom Tom app on an iPhone was my favorite GPS. The display was clear and easy to read, it presented all the information you needed, and the maps were more accurate than any of the other units I tried. Having the maps downloaded on the phone was important for when cellular service was weak. Being able to configure the display was also nice. But the new user interface in this app is a step backwards. The text is so small and dim that I had to have my wife read it to me, or hunch over the steering wheel and squint - not something you want to do in heavy traffic. The colors are dimmer than in the original app, making it harder to read. The sidebar showing distance to the next POI (gas, accident, etc) is nice, but again, hard to read. After trying it on two trips of several hundred miles each, I switched back to the old app, which was still on my phone. What an improvement! I guess Ill just use the old app until it stops working, then switch to Google Maps. Hopefully Tom Tom will give us back the "classic interface" or fix this "New Coke" interface before then.

Terrible UI

Not a very intuitive user interface. Would be great if routes were automatically calculated to avoid traffic hot spots.

Bloated app

6.5gb install size is ridiculous. App would not find roads on the map. I had to find them myself and manually input the destination on the map.

Absolutely Horrible App!!!

The app keeps crashing after downloading the map. Isnt easy to navigate. I can only download one region because there is not enough space on my phone. The old app had no map to download. It was the entire US and was very easy to navigate. Did you turn over your development team to children?

Works Perfectly

I really dont understand all the baby whining. It works exactly as it should.

Great app but missing Instructions View

This app is a great improvement from the original TomTom. But after all this time and multiple updates, its still missing the feature I used most on the original app. View Instructions of the route. I need to be able to read the route so I know what to expect. Dont have time to watch the preview. PLEASE ADD INSTRUCTIONS VIEW BACK.

Help me feature request

Thank you for the new app Tom Tom Team

Still cant skip part of route.

And that was the single greatest feature. This certainly isnt baby whining.

Improving...

The app misses 3 thing to be perfect: - Waypoints - 3D touch support - Apple Watch app The graphics are nice, interface is good nad quite easy to use.
